Feeling Stuck? Maybe You're Standing at a Crossroads
Are you feeling stuck and lazy and unmotivated? Maybe you are not all those things, maybe you’re carrying too much.
My last blog was in January, nearly eight months ago, and I found myself wondering where all that time went. One minute I was full of ideas, creating content, writing, sharing, learning... and then life happened. Somewhere along the way the inspiration quietly packed its bags and wandered off without telling me.
Add to that not feeling particularly inspired by life in general and, well... here we are. Standing at what feels like a crossroads. The funny thing is, I know exactly what I need to do.
I know the next step.
I know the actions.
I know that writing this blog is one of them.
But a part of me has been quietly saying...
"I'll be damned if I'm going to do anything about it."
Have you ever felt like that? You know what needs doing, but something inside you digs its heels in and simply refuses. No logical explanation. No real reason. Just... no.
Many people feel like this. In fact, it's one of the most common things I help clients with. The irony isn't lost on me. Do you think I can always do this for myself?
I actually had to laugh.
I found myself wondering...
Who exactly is running this show today? My adult self? Or my inner child? Because they have very different ways of responding to life.
Who's Driving the Bus?
When life throws us something unexpected, difficult or uncomfortable, our reaction often tells us exactly who's in charge. Our adult self tends to pause. Take a breath. Gather information. Make a decision. Take action.
It doesn't mean the situation isn't difficult. It simply means we move through it rather than becoming it.
Our younger self, however, has a different strategy. She might cross her arms. Throw an internal tantrum. Hide under the metaphorical blanket. Refuse to think. Refuse to decide. Refuse to move. "I don't want to." "I can't." "It's too hard." "What if it goes wrong?" "I'll just stay here." Sound familiar?
It certainly did to me.
This younger version isn't being difficult on purpose. She's doing exactly what she learned to do when she didn't feel safe, seen, heard or supported. And that matters. Because the goal isn't to silence her. It's to understand her.
Feeling Stuck Isn't a Personality Trait
One of the biggest myths I hear is:
"I'm just someone who procrastinates." Or... "I'm lazy." "I'm unmotivated." "I always sabotage myself."
No. Those are behaviours. They are not who you are. Behaviours are clues. They're pointing towards something underneath. Sometimes it is fear, or grief, or overwhelm. Sometimes it's old emotional experiences that your nervous system never really finished processing or simply exhaustion.
And sometimes...
It's old trapped emotional energy that keeps pulling you backwards every time you try to move forwards.
Imagine trying to walk through thick mud while everyone else seems to be walking on a footpath. You can still move. It's just incredibly hard work. Eventually you stop trying. Not because you're incapable. Because you're exhausted.
The Weight We Don't See
What I've found in my own healing journey, and through working with clients, is that we often underestimate just how much energy we carry. Disappointments, criticism, fear, embarrassment, loss, heartbreak, rejection, failure.
Even things we barely remember consciously can leave an energetic imprint. Our minds may have moved on. Our bodies and nervous systems sometimes haven't. This is where I love working with modalities like Emotion Code and Reiki. Not because they're magical fixes, they’re not.
They're simply ways of helping the body let go of what it no longer needs to carry.
When we release stuck emotional energy, something interesting happens. We create space. The space to think differently, to breathe, to choose, to respond instead of react.
It's a little like cleaning out an overstuffed wardrobe.
Until you remove what's no longer serving you, there's nowhere to put anything new.
Easy Doesn't Mean Worthless
Here's another interesting belief I've bumped into many times. "If it's easy, it can't possibly work."
How many of us believe that?
If something takes years, costs thousands, requires endless struggle... Then surely it must be valuable.
Yet when something feels simple, gentle or quick, we become suspicious.
Healing can be easy, change does not have to hurt and you do not have to earn it. Some of the biggest shifts I've witnessed have happened quietly.
Without drama, reliving painful memories and without spending years talking about what happened.
Sometimes releasing what's been trapped creates an immediate sense of relief. Sometimes it's more subtle. You suddenly notice you're responding differently. You're speaking up. You're sleeping better. You're calmer. You're making decisions more easily.
You realise one day that something which used to trigger you simply... doesn't anymore.
Healing isn't always loud and more often than not it is wonderfully ordinary.
Awareness Creates Choice
One thing I come back to again and again is awareness. Awareness changes everything.
The moment I realised I was standing there saying, "I know exactly what to do but I refuse," I smiled. Not because I'd solved it, but because I had noticed it.
Awareness gives us options. Without awareness we simply repeat old patterns. With awareness we can ask different questions.
Whose voice is this? How old does this feeling actually feel? Is this fear current? Or familiar? Am I making today's decision based on today's circumstances? Or yesterday's experiences?
These questions gently invite our adult self back into the room.
Small Steps Count
One thing I've learnt over the years is that we often wait to feel motivated before taking action whereas action creates motivation more often than the other way around, so why wait? Do that one thing, and then one thing more and bit by bit these small steps create momentum.
Every single time.
Healing Isn't About Becoming Someone Else
People sometimes think healing means becoming endlessly positive. Never feeling frustrated and always knowing the answer. Doubt never comes knocking and there is this different you that magically manifests itself.
That's not my experience.
Healing isn't about becoming someone different. It's about becoming more of who you already are underneath all the protective layers. You'll still have difficult days. I certainly do. You occasionally feel stuck. The difference is you'll recognise it sooner and you'll understand what's happening. You have the tools and you trust yourself to move through it instead of believing you'll stay there forever.
That changes everything.
The Crossroads
Crossroads are interesting places. They can feel uncomfortable because they ask something of us. Not necessarily huge action, just a choice.Either stay where you are or take one step. And if you choose to stay where you are that is still a decision. Life keeps moving regardless, so the question becomes... Will you move with it?
The One Next Step
What will your one next step be.Mine was writing this blog. It is not perfect, it was not meant to be.I just had to do it. By choosing progress I am telling me that I already know what I need to do. One step at a time.
Maybe you know what to do too. And if that younger version of you is stamping her feet and refusing to budge, perhaps instead of fighting her, you could simply become curious. Ask what she needs. Listen. Offer reassurance. Then allow your adult self to gently take her hand and walk forward together. You are not enemies and together you make a pretty incredible team of wisdom from experience combined with courage, curiosity and imagination.
And if you've been feeling stuck for longer than you'd like, know this...
You don't have to stay there. Sometimes all that's needed is a little space, a little awareness, and the willingness to release what no longer belongs to you. When we clear the emotional weight we've been carrying, we often discover that the path was there all along. We simply couldn't see it beneath everything we were trying to carry.
Here's to taking the next small step.
Whatever that looks like for you.
